RE: Fla. Keys restaurant recommendations please

as some others have already said, my favorite is the Fish House on Key Largo - great food, good sized portions - always have to eat there more than once.

RE: Awning and wind?

I found a product that I highly recommend for awnings, it is called "the claw". Their website is www.theclaw.com. It is a bit costly - but it works even in sandy soils. I frequent the beaches and have had experiences with "wind gusts" and had the pleasure and cost of replacing an awning. I also use awning deflappers, but do check the weather frequently while camping. I will put it up during storms or if a strom front is moving in, but I have no concerns about leaving it out in normal conditions, even if I am not at the campground. The cost of the claw is minimal compared to awning repairs, it is a well designed product and is superior to any other awning anchoring system that I have seen.

RE: newbie looking for good camping in MS,TN or AL.

Try the Corp of Engineers parks, you can check out and reserve sites at www.recreation.gov. I like our state parks here in Alabama, but it is hard to beat the COE parks in Mississippi and Alabama. Also, you may want to try Lake Lowndes in Columbus, Mississippi - it is a Missisippi state park but we enjoyed our stay there, spray the site for ants though.

RE: ReserveAmerica - FL State Parks- What time can you reserve ?

Yes, it is 8am eastern, 7am for me (central time) sorry about that. I did call Reserve America about the timing and they said 8am eastern time, I was wondering if me being on central time was affecting my inability to get a spot in the Keys. I was assured that it has nothing to do with the time zone, but simply luck. If you do not get what you want, look for cancellations and be persistent in looking - that worked much better and seemed a lot less trouble.

RE: ReserveAmerica - FL State Parks- What time can you reserve ?

Florida State Parks does not do reservations until 7am EST on the dot. If it is a popular campground - you really do have to have it ready and then hit right at 7am remember there are others doing the same thing. For a spot in the keys over Christmas, I tried and tried - never did get what I wanted - few months went by and then I did get lucky by watching for cancellations, ended up with a 13 day stay at Curry Hammock right on the beach. Oh, it also does not work well if you hit too early (0659), I made that mistake trying to get my timing right on more than one occasion.

RE: Trip Planning - Banff/Jasper Questions

I have done Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier, Banff/ Jasper before in one trip. Initially had Yellowstone, Tetons, and Glacier planned - saw a picture of Peyto Lake in my AAA travel agency and that was all it took. The same day, a friend mentioned including Banff/ Jasper to my husband - we figured it was a sign so we bit the bullet and did it all in one trip. It does make for a very busy trip as there is so much to see and do but it really was that memorable of a vacation for both of us. We are really glad that we did the whole thing, each place is different and has special places/ things to see and do. Be sure to include Waterton Lakes and stop in Yoho National Park while in the Banff/ Lake Louise area. We enjoyed it so much, that we went back the following year - left off Yellowstone/ Tetons and included Mt Ranier/ Cascades/ Olympic and went to Glacier/ Banff/ Jasper again. Plans to go again in the next 2 years - it was fabulous. Yellowstone and Tetons were also wonderful - we went back to visit that area in the wintertime.

RE: Fifth Wheel Heights

The Keystone Cougar line now has several choices that have a bedroom slide, the 2009 models are coming out with some 3 slide options in the Cougar line. Still lists them as 12 feet tall. Went to see them at an RV show, my husband is 6 feet and can now stand in the bedroom area of a Cougar - considering trading my older Cougar for one with a bedroom slide. We have liked the Cougar line, no problems, easy to pull, has the convenience features that we need - we are not fulltimers though.

RE: lite 5h wheel

Look at Cougar 245 by Keystone, it is about 26 feet and has been great to pull around - no problems

RE: Burchfield Branch COE Adger, AL

Burchfield is a nice quiet park. I have been there in the past and had a campsite overlooking the water with a nice little deck. Although the water side was opposite the awning, this was not an issue and we had a great time. Have a good time, it will be much quieter in comparison to Tannehill.

RE: Cougar 245RKS

I have a 2002 Cougar 245 and love it. We do not have kids and have really enjoyed our Cougar and have been everywhere with it. It pulls great, I like the rear kitchen and for a smaller camper, storage is not bad. I have seen many that were much larger that I would not trade my 245 for. We have not had any issues with our Cougar. In my opinion, it is hard to beat, especially with its features and smaller size. It is easy to park and fits nicely into many areas, especially state parks where some of the larger rigs do not fit well. Larger 5th wheels have a lot more room inside, but their size can limit them on some campsites - I prefer the smaller variety that we can take anywhere - we have a 60 lb dog that has a kennel and she also fits without major problems. Primarily, we spend a lot of time outdoors and not indoors when camping so the smaller size really has worked well for us.

RE: Bahia Honda vs John Pennekamp

Don't give up, keep checking for cancellations at Bahia Honda or Curry Hammock. Last year started with sites at Pennekamp but eventually with a lot of persistence ended up with 2 weeks ocean front at Curry Hammock for 2 weeks straight on same site over Christmas/ New Years. Cancellations occur, so keep up the persistence. However, camping anywhere in the keys is always great - although I do admit that some places are nicer than others.

RE: Dry Tortugas/Key West

I have been on the Dry Tortugas ferry and highly recommend the trip. The price is not that bad for a day's worth of activities in the Keys, you get fed lunch and drinks, and you can snorkel too. I agree that I thought twice about paying the money and then decided to go for it - this was a wonderful decision. It was a most relaxing day, the scenery was great, and it was one of the highlights of my trip to Key West. It really was worth the money in my opinion. Long Key and Bahia Honda have canoe and/or kayak rentals. I have seen several canoes and kayaks around Curry Hammock State park but the State Park does not rent them there - but someone must nearby because there are quite a few in the area. I would also highly recommend the snorkel trips from both Bahia and John Pennekamp State Parks - each is a little different trip.

Great Topsail Site Opening

Regrettably, I have to cancel a trip to Topsail from April 11-16 (5 nights) because hubby has to work. The site is 161, if anyone is interested. Hope someone has a great time, it is a perfect time of year to visit the area.

RE: What's the secret-Florida state parks???

Keep checking frequently for cancellations. I have stayed at Curry Hammock twice and both times was on others cancellations. I have found it best to check later in the day - not at the 8am rule (never had luck that way). The last time - I just kept checking and checking and would book as others would move and finally ended up with a 13 day stay over Christmas on the same site (ocean front) at that. It took a total of 5 reservations but I never had to move from the site. The first time, I kept wanting an extra day stay and called and called - the day before I was to leave Curry Hammock - I tried again and there was 1 site open for another day and it was the site I was already on. Again, that was an early afternoon lucky call. Don't give up - be persistent and keep checking.

RE: rear kitchens

I prefer a rear kitchen model on a fifth wheel. I have never had any problems with anything breaking, leaking, spilling either in the fridge or cabinets. I do not use the bars on the fridge and I have breakable dishes in the cabinets - but you do need to make sure that the fridge door is closed tightly before travel - just like you would for any RV. Never had problems with beer fizzing out or eggs breaking (but just like I do when I am at home - I do not squeeze the eggs tightly in even though the fridge in RV is smaller than home). I am looking to update my RV to a new model and plan to get another rear kitchen model - to me, it offers the most space and storage in an RV kitchen without making huge sacrifices on space and storage in other areas of the camper. As some have posted, there are also those who would never get a rear kitchen model - that is why there are varities of floor plans - I will go to the rear kitchen models first on the sales lot as rear kitchen models seem to suit my camping style the best.

RE: Flordia Keys

To answer how long it takes to get to Long Key from Knoxville - I do not have that exact info BUT it takes about 18 hours from Birmingham area to get to Marathon with a 5th wheel - we travel it over 2 days. I have been through Tampa and also through the Daytona/ Ft Lauderdale way - you should find it easiest to go through Tampa and accross the southern tip of Florida (go to Naples and accross US Hwy 41). Way too much traffic and congestion around Ft Lauderdale in my opinion.

RE: In and Out RV Park Lake City Fla

Have stayed there - it is just as it is named "In and Out". Lots of permanent residents they seemd nice but I was leary - I would consider going a little further and staying at Traveler's Campground in Alachua - which is just north of Gainesville. Just a suggestion. It is also an in and out type park - but it is cleaner and better maintained.

RE: Looking for good hiking within a day of central AL

There are several great places to go - these are my top ten for a day's drive 1. Tennessee/ North Carolina Smokies (dogs not allowed on most trails though) 2. Big South Fork (great hiking) 3. North Georgia Mountains 4. North Florida (Good trails and State Parks - dogs now welcome at all state park campgrounds - but never on beaches) 5. Gulf National Seashore 6. Little River Canyon in NW Alabama 7. Bankhead National Forest 8. Talladega National Forest 9. Appalachicola National Forest in Florida (one of my favorites) 10. Land Between the Lakes in Western Kentucky Some others to try would be Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee, Shiloh Military Park. Longer drives but still can be driven in a day would be the Georgia or South Carolina Coastal areas, Congaree National Park in South Carolina, or the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. I have reached them all from central Alabama in a day's drive with a camper.

RE: Seashells at the beach at Topsail??

As the above postings have indicated, there are very few small shells at Topsail (have seen a few though). St George does have several shells but the one of the best places for shelling is Sanibel. The beach at Topsail is first rate, the sand will be whiter than St George, the campground at TopSail has many more amenities and is more conviently located than St George. All of that being said, my very favorite place to camp is St George - I prefer the quietness and isolation of St George.
